Via Francigena

A stay at our hotel offers the opportunity to explore some of the most striking stretches of the historic Via Francigena, first travelled by Bishop Sigeric in 990, from Canterbury to Rome. The route, over two thousand kilometres long, crosses breathtaking landscapes among mountains, woods, fields and ancient roads, today well signposted and safe for all. In Tuscany, the Via Francigena stretches from the Cisa Pass to Ponte di Rigo (Lazio), for 394 km among nature, historic villages and eno-gastronomic culture. The Gambassi Terme - San Gimignano and San Gimignano - Monteriggioni stages are easily accessible from our hotel.

Pontremoli - Aulla (33 km)

Gambassi Terme - San Gimignano (13 km)

The stage consists of 13 km of flat paths, which can be covered in about 3 hours. The landscape is characterised by the charm of the Val d'Elsa ridges, streaked with castles and stone abbeys. Along the trail, the Sanctuary of Pancole, the village of Collemucioli and the parish church of Cellole are noteworthy. The stage ends with the hill of San Gimignano, crowned by 13 solemn towers, which draw its unmistakable profile. Take advantage of the plenty of time for a tour of the city and rest at our hotel.

San Gimignano - Monteriggioni (31 km)

This stage extends for 30 kma journey of about 7 hours on foot. You are here on one of the universally considered most beautiful stretches of the Via Francigena. With postcard-perfect Tuscany behind you - San Gimignano - you tackle pleasant up-and-down paths to discover churches steeped in spirituality and history (Santa Maria a Coneo, San Martino di Strove and Abbadia a Isola). The hike ends in the presence of the austere walls of Monteriggioni, a fascinating medieval stronghold.

Monteriggioni - Siena (21 km)

White roads and serene countryside accompany the arrival in majestic Siena.

Siena - Ponte d'Arbia (Lucignano) (25 km)

From the stones of Siena to the Crete Senesi, among hills and small rural villages.
